Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain Trek

ITINERARY

Day 1: Cusco - Upis - Abra Arapa - Hatun Pukaqocha

Our adventure begins at 5:00 a.m. We will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you in our private vehicle for three hours to the starting point of our trek in the village of Upis. There, you'll enjoy your first breakfast prepared by our talented cook and have the chance to admire the stunning scenery. This meal will provide you with all the energy needed for the trek. After a short period, we’ll begin the adventure. We will gradually ascend for three hours to a place where we’ll pause for lunch.

During this part of the journey, you'll have the opportunity to view the majestic Ausangate Mountain in the distance. Midway, enjoy a delicious lunch. You'll have time to rest and recharge before continuing the day. After lunch, we’ll start a two-hour ascent to Abra Arapa (4,800 m / 15,748 ft). We’ll then descend for three and a half hours to reach Hatun Pukaqocha Lagoon, where we’ll set up camp. Along the way, we’ll also see Yanaqocha Lagoon. You’ll be at the foot of the impressive Ausangate Mountain, marveling at the size and pure beauty of this snow-capped peak. Once at the campsite, you can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or coffee. Later, dinner will be served. Afterward, it’s time to rest and enjoy a well-deserved, restorative sleep.

Day 2: Hatun Pukaqocha - Anantapata - Surinecocha

Waking up with coca tea is a revitalizing and natural experience enjoyed by the Incas for centuries, offering an energy boost to start the day. After breakfast, we’ll head to Abra Pukaqocha, at 4,870 m / 14,764 ft, where you’ll be captivated by stunning views of glaciers and green valleys, as well as the imposing presence of Apu Ausangate and its turquoise lagoons. Once at the summit, you’ll get a close look at the majesty of Apu Ausangate and understand its cultural significance in the Andes, while admiring the beauty of Chilca Valley and an initial view of Rainbow Mountain. After taking some photos, we’ll gradually descend for an hour and a half to Anantapata, at 4,750 m / 15,584 ft, where we’ll have lunch and relax before continuing the ascent for two hours to Abra Warmisaya, at 4,895 m / 16,355 ft, where you’ll enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. We’ll then descend for an hour to reach Surinaqocha Lagoon, our camping destination, where you’ll experience a peaceful sunset behind Rainbow Mountain. After a comforting dinner, we’ll prepare for the final day of this exciting trek, resting to recharge for the next day.

Day 3: Surinecocha - Rainbow Mountain - Cusco

After enjoying an early, delicious breakfast, we’ll head to Rainbow Mountain to admire the colorful valley under the golden light of dawn. You’ll have approximately an hour to enjoy this paradise before the crowds arrive. Our expert guide will take you to key spots for capturing the best photos and making the most of your time at this beautiful location.

The guide will explain in detail why this mountain has such unique colors and how it was “discovered” in recent years. It is one of the most stunning places in South America and a major natural attraction in Peru. After taking in this Andean gem, you’ll be impressed not only by its incredible beauty but also by the tranquility surrounding it, offering the best views of the valley.

Finally, we’ll descend for two hours through ancient Andean communities and herds of llamas. You’ll notice that these small communities still keep their ancestral traditions alive. After a delicious and comforting lunch, a private transport will be waiting to take you back to your accommodation in Cusco.
