Travel to Cusco.

The Cusco airport currently only operates domestic flights. All international passengers arriving by plane must disembark in Lima and go through customs. It's important to note that due to Cusco's high altitude, flights may experience delays or cancellations. Additionally, any change in weather can halt air traffic. If you prefer an alternative overland option, buses are a viable choice. However, the journey can be lengthy, especially from Lima. Buses from Lima can take approximately 20 hours to reach Cusco.

Customer Pick-Up.

Ausangate Adventure can pick you up from your hotel, provided it's located in Cusco's Historic Center. During the briefing, your guide will coordinate the meeting time, but please allow for a waiting time variation of 30 to 45 minutes due to local traffic. Cusco has narrow, cobblestone streets, which can make access difficult for some hotels and Airbnbs. Some locations may be in areas without vehicular access or on steep inclines, complicating luggage transport. It's advisable to book accommodation with easy access to facilitate transportation.

Luggage Storage.

You can securely leave any additional luggage in Cusco, either at your hotel or with us at Ausangate Adventure while you embark on your hike. We will take care of storing your luggage in the morning before your hike begins and return it to you once you're back in Cusco. It's important to ensure your bags are clearly labeled for easy retrieval.

Circuits Visited on This Tour.

This Machu Picchu tour may follow Circuit 1 or Circuit 2, depending on your entry time and availability. Circuit 1 allows you to explore the upper part of Machu Picchu, including the main observatory, ideal for classic photos. Circuit 2 takes you through the most complete part of the Citadel and to important buildings like the observatory, temples, houses, the Sacred Rock, and the Temple of the Condor.

Altitude Sickness.

People who book their trip to Peru, especially to Cusco, begin to worry about altitude sickness. The air at high altitudes has less oxygen than at sea level, forcing the body to work harder to get the oxygen it needs.

Over several days at high altitude, the body adjusts to the lower amount of oxygen in the air. Therefore, we always recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before starting any hike in the Andes. Cusco is a fascinating city with much to do, so if you have more time to acclimatize, you won't be bored.

Altitude sickness can initially manifest with symptoms similar to flu or a hangover. You may experience headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty breathing during exercise. If any of these symptoms become severe, please contact our office, and we will help you find a doctor.

Most of the time, these symptoms are mild. We recommend taking activities slowly, allowing your body to adjust. Drink plenty of fluids like water or coca tea. Coca tea has been used since ancient times to prevent altitude sickness. Coca leaves contain alkaloids that help transport oxygen in the blood, aiding your body in mitigating the effects of altitude sickness. Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and coffee, as they increase urination frequency and dehydrate you. Avoid smoking, as it hinders your body from getting oxygen. Avoid sleeping pills, as they can cause shallow nocturnal breathing, hindering oxygen absorption while you sleep.

Remember, the hike to Machu Picchu is not a race. Even those in excellent physical condition can suffer from altitude sickness if they ascend the mountain too quickly. Go slowly, and you'll allow your body to adapt to the altitude.

Your healthcare provider may prescribe medications such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone to help prevent altitude sickness. Start taking them two days before reaching high altitude and continue while at high altitude.

Weather.

The weather in Machu Picchu is variable and depends on the season, located in a high jungle region in the Peruvian Andes. During the dry season, from April to October, the weather is pleasant with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-25°C (68-77°F) and cold nights that can drop to 6-11°C (43-52°F). This is the best time to visit due to the lower likelihood of rain.

In the rainy season, from November to March, rainfall is frequent, especially in January and February. During this period, daytime temperatures are slightly warmer, while mornings and nights remain cool. It's crucial to be prepared for sudden rains with waterproof clothing and dress in layers to adapt to temperature fluctuations.

Regardless of the time of year, the weather in Machu Picchu can be unpredictable, so it's essential to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions.

First Aid.

Each Ausangate Adventure guide has received first aid training from a physician. When they accompany you on the hike, they'll carry a first aid kit for basic medical situations and oxygen. They'll take good care of you. If something unexpected happens and you feel you can no longer complete the hike, they will determine the safest and quickest way to get you off the trail and to a clinic. They will never leave you alone; a team member will be with you at all times until you're safely under medical care.

Protests and Strikes.

We will do our best to maintain your original itinerary, even if it means departing a night early. In some cases, trips may be canceled. If there are changes, protests and strikes are common in Peru and can affect our travel plans. Roads may be blocked, and trains may stop. However, our operations team will communicate with you. Your safety is our top priority, and we will take the best measures to protect you in any unforeseen situation.
