Location
The Sacred Valley is located in the Andes mountain range in Peru, about 50 kilometers from Cusco. The Urubamba River, a tributary of the Amazon River and considered one of the most powerful in the world, runs through this valley. The region is rich in Inca archaeological sites, with highlights including the cities of Pisac, Calca, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo.
History
The Sacred Valley was once a crucial center of the Inca Empire and housed some of the most significant Inca sites, such as Machu Picchu. It was also a vital agricultural zone for the Incas and remains home to many traditional native communities.
When the Spanish arrived in the Sacred Valley in the early 16th century, they quickly began building their settlements and churches. Additionally, they forced many natives to leave their homes to work on plantations and in mines. Despite this, the inhabitants of the Sacred Valley have preserved their cultural traditions and played a prominent role in Peruvian society.
Climate
The Sacred Valley is also famous for its stunning landscapes and pleasant climate. The weather in the Sacred Valley is generally warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. However, there can be variations depending on the time of year and the altitude of the valley.
For example, mornings and evenings can be cool, and at higher altitudes, the temperature can drop below 10 degrees Celsius. The Sacred Valley has two main seasons: the rainy season (from November to March) and the dry season (from April to October).
The rainy season is characterized by increased precipitation, making it the best time to see the valley’s waterfalls at their peak. The dry season is typically warmer and drier, but there is still abundant vegetation thanks to irrigation canals that bring water from nearby mountains. No matter when you visit the Sacred Valley, you’ll be amazed by its natural beauty.
Altitude
The altitude varies between 2,700 and 3,400 meters above sea level. The valley is one of the most fertile areas in the world and hosts a wide variety of crops, including potatoes, corn, quinoa, and amaranth. The soil is also rich in minerals, making it a popular destination for agriculture.
